Succeeding in Online Classes
If you know what to expect from your online education program, you are more likely to get the most out of your courses and degree. On this page, we'll discuss some of the keys to success in the online classroom.
Consistency
Because online education classes are so flexible, it's easy to fall into the habit of procrastinating. If you don't log into your online classes consistently, your grades will suffer, and you will end up putting off assignments and studying until it's too late. To avoid this, get in the habit of logging into the online classroom every day at the same time if possible. Even if you don't complete assignments or engage in class discussions when you log in, at the very least you can check for news and updates posted by the instructor. Getting in the habit of logging into class regularly will help you stay on top of assignments, participation requirements, and important class news. Likewise, you should also try to study at the same time every day, preferably when you are most alert. If you're a morning person, for example, you might try studying and completing assignments for an hour or two every morning before work.
Participation
No matter where you get your online education, participation will be an essential part of your coursework. Most online schools require students to submit a certain number of posts at least four or five out of the seven days of the week. These posts will have to meet a certain quality standard as well. They will not count toward your participation until your instructor has deemed them substantive posts. Try to do more than the minimum number of posts if you can in the event that one of your comments is not counted toward your participation grade. Engage in dialogue with your peers and instructor about current reading material, assignments, and questions you may have.
Completing Assignments
A typical online education class will have papers, projects, and group work that students must complete. Typically, you will submit your papers as Word attachments to your instructor. You may also have to use PowerPoint in online classes to complete presentations. An important part of education online that many students underestimate is team learning, or group work. Many online colleges and universities use learning teams to teach students cooperation, leadership, and managing group dynamics. Get to know your learning team members and communicate your roles and expectations clearly for the best experience.
